Breakout Session - Storyteller/Librarian Collaboration: Engaging 21st Century Learners in Holocaust Study
Storyteller and second generation Holocaust survivor Judy Sima recounts the gripping story of her mother’s escape from Germany and of a harrowing encounter with the Gestapo to get her grandfather released from Buchenwald Concentration Camp. Primary source documents acquired from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) and used in Judy’s historical research will be highlighted in a PowerPoint presentation. Lakeview High School Librarian and USHMM Teacher Fellow Gigi Lincoln will then discuss how collaboration with Judy (via four prior in-person and virtual school visits) has successfully provided educational enrichment for an English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum unit focusing on implicit bias, dehumanization, and social injustice through the study of historical literature and the reading of Night by Elie Wiesel. Gigi will share supplemental instructional resources designed to addresses the challenge of teaching 21st century learners about the Holocaust.

Breakout Session - Demystifying DDC along with Shortcuts to Cataloging
This session is for those of you who have and have not had cataloging and classification education.  A basic understanding of the Dewey Decimal System can assist you in making your collection relevant and clearer when instructing your students.  We want our collections to be logical and materials easy to locate.  We want our students to be comfortable in the school library and the public library as well.  The “non-fiction” collection does not need to be genrefied.  It is already done for you.

Attend this session and discover cataloging and classification tools that will make it easier for you to manage your collection.

Breakout Session - Starting a Maker-Centered Movement
Troy School District has undergone many changes in the Library Media Center over the past few years. I'd like to share about our journey with Maker-Centered Learning and how it has helped transform our elementary school libraries into more relevant spaces for all students. I'll share our experience as a growing department, how we created maker spaces in our elementary schools, and how we sparked a maker-centered movement in our district. In addition, I'll share how we connected Maker-Centered Learning to the literacy and library skills we were already teaching kids, making our library lessons more engaging and meaningful. We'll also participate in some maker-centered learning routines so attendees get to experience what our students have learned and can walk away with ideas for using maker-centered learning in their school.

Breakout Session - Hone Your Information Literacy Superpowers!
The very big, very real task of today's educators is to ignite in students the desire to discover while also arming them with the judgement to wade through false and misleading information from questionable sources. In this session, attendees will:

1) Support student research projects that use several sources to build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic;
2) Learn new strategies to teach students to distinguish among fact, opinion, and reasoned judgment in a text;
3) Practice proven ways of evaluating the credibility and accuracy of sources and noting any discrepancies among the data.

Activities, tools, technologies and strategies:

- Attendees will receive graphic organizers from Britannica to help educators determine an information need and locate, evaluate, and use information ethically.
- Britannica School (available to all Michigan educators!) will be shared as a trusted resource for information, and attendees will learn about helpful educator tools to help support student research.
