Breakout Session - Get Inked: Empowering Teens to Create and Share Their Own Stories
The United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth (2014) recognized that youth from traditionally marginalized populations are impacted by “layered marginalization” which exponentially impacts representation, excluding teens from conversations regarding political and social policies which directly affect them. To combat these feelings of alienation and disconnect, it is vital for teens to have spaces that offer opportunities for them to express and see their identities, ideas, and experiences. The work done by librarians, teachers, and bookstore owners to build book collections that reflect teens’ lives, backgrounds, and concerns is vital to this effort. Some teens find further empowerment through creating and sharing their own stories, often using young adult literature as a starting point or inspiration for their own action or writing.
In an effort to provide safe spaces for teens to process via writing, The Get Inked Teen Writing Conference invites teens from across the nation to spend an entire day writing alongside published young adult authors, networking with fellow teens, and deepening their understanding of writers’ craft. Feedback from the participants reveals that at the end of the day, these teens leave exhausted but filled with hope and inspiration and the sure knowledge that their voices have been heard and that they have been taken seriously as writers.
This session will share a behind the scenes look at the structure and purpose of the Get Inked Teen Writing Conference as well as advice on how attendees can form similar partnerships to create safe spaces for teen writing in their own communities. The founder of Get Inked will share her experiences writing alongside young writers and practical tips for crafting writing workshops that privilege the voices of teens. Participants will collaboratively brainstorm opportunities for teen writers and engage in writing activities that spark creativity and growth.

Break out Session - Facing Book Challenges. What we learned and how you can be prepared.
We will share our experience, our updated collection development and challenged book policies.

There has been an uptick in book challenges nationwide and the Troy School District has been in the thick of it. We plan to share our experiences and our updated policies so that other librarians can be ready if/when the challenges come their way.

ALA's stance on the library's responsibility to house books that support all people is very clear. The current challenges to library materials are very much targeted toward removing the stories of characters who are POC, or who are LGBTQIA+, or who are from different cultural backgrounds, or who deviate from what is traditionally seen as “the norm”, or that show our history from a non-white perspective. It is important that we maintain collections that allow students to read books that serve as "mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors" (Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop).

Breakout Session - Mentoring Teachers through the Copyright Maze
Are you charged with training and mentoring teachers at your site or district about copyright? Do your colleagues reach out to you with questions about what they can and cannot do to comply with copyright? C&C, who provides FREE K-12 resources to teach copyright and fair use to students, has created a new course to share with colleagues. The goal is to help fellow teachers become positive role models and confident, knowledgeable instructors as they better understand bends in the road and issues facing themselves and their students. I'll clarify copyright, why it's important and its place in digital citizenship. I'll offer guidelines, lesson tie-ins, and delve into specific topics, such as plagiarism vs. infringement. Attendees will come away with a new ready to use tool to empower colleagues to navigate the copyright maze.
